On behalf of everyone at Humanity in Music and Spadina Fort York Community Care Foodbank, we would like to thank everyone who came out to volunteer, attend and support Sound of Giving. Below is a short video montage of our benefit concert 2023.

In 2023, Humanity in Music supported an important community cause by presenting Sound of Giving, a benefit concert held on Friday, December 8 at the Palmerston Public Library Theatre in support of the Spadina–Fort York Community Care Food Bank.

Through this event, Humanity in Music helped advance the mission of an active program serving low-income individuals and families who have been disproportionately impacted by the economic effects of the pandemic. With the support of our community, the concert contributed to strengthening the food bank’s ability to meet growing needs.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who lent their support and helped make this initiative a success.

Spadina Fort York Community Care Foodbank

Located at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, Ontario, the Spadina–Fort York Community Care Food Bank serves individuals and families experiencing food insecurity every Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The program supports people from diverse communities and circumstances, including families with young children, individuals with mobility and mental health challenges, and those with dietary restrictions.

Founded by Shauna Harris, the food bank is powered by a dedicated volunteer team that manages food rescues, purchasing, donations, pick-ups, and deliveries, along with many other essential operations. Shauna’s leadership and tireless commitment continue to drive the success and sustainability of the program.

Known affectionately as “J” at the food bank, I have served as the Volunteer Program Coordinator at Spadina–Fort York Community Care Food Bank for nearly two years. In this role, I coordinate a team of up to 30 dedicated volunteers who assist with food pick-ups, offloading, setup, and distribution to our clients.

The need for volunteers and donations is ongoing and urgent. Food insecurity does not discriminate, particularly in our post-pandemic reality. Families often arrive early and wait for hours, regardless of weather or other challenges, an unmistakable reminder of how vital this support is. Through this work, we have met fellow Canadians living below the poverty line while facing complex challenges beyond food insecurity alone. Our commitment is grounded in lived experience, and we understand what it takes to make a meaningful difference. We hope to inspire others to get involved and support this cause in any way they can.
